International Mother's Day will be observed across the country today elsewhere in the world, honoring mothers with giving gifts and greetings.
The International Mother's Day has been celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year for the last few years.
The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called "Mothering Sunday". Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent, "Mothering Sunday" honored the mothers of England.
In the United States, the Mother's Day was started in 1872 by peace activist Julia Ward Howe, who was horrified by the carnage and suffering of the Civil War and wrote a proclamation calling on women to unite and oppose war.
However, more than 40 countries, including Bangladesh, observe the day following American culture that originated from the thought that Anna Jarvis, daughter of Anna Reeves Jarvis, was the power behind the official establishment of Mother's Day in 1905.
In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother's Day, as a day for American citizens to show the flag in honor of those mothers whose sons had died in war.
The day is celebrated in Bangladesh through different programmes in electronic media and according grand reception to mothers of jewels recognizing their contribution to family, society and nation. Restaurants and shopping malls give special offers on the occasion.
TODAY is Mother’s Day. It is that special day of the year when we pay tribute to billions of women worldwide who, in bringing forth new life, risked their own; courageous women who have, within their powers, shielded us from harm in our young and carefree years. They are the women who instilled values that have helped shape our positive attitudes toward life, and by which many of us live today; women who in traditional communities, still sacrifice potential careers to care for their children and their households; and women in modern community settings who perform the triple role of breadwinners, managers of their households, and their children’s first mentors about life and morals.
The earliest celebration of Mother’s Day dates back to the annual spring festival which the ancient Greeks dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many deities, and to the offerings ancient Romans made to Cybele, their Great Mother of Gods. Early Christians celebrated a Mother’s Day of sorts during a festival held on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of Mary, the mother of Christ. But the modern-day idea of Mother’s Day started in 1905, when Anna Jarvis campaigned and lobbied the officials of that time to designate a day to memorialize the life work of all mothers. However, it was not until May 8, 1914, that her efforts paid off when President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day – a tradition carried on to this day.
Immeasurable is the love and care that mothers give. Their influence in our life transcends our childhood and puberty years. Our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, recognized this. It is no wonder why Filipinos regard their mothers fondly as the "ilaw ng tahanan" (light of the home), because of the wisdom, values, and moral guidance they provide to their children.
As we observe Mother’s Day today, let us accord our mothers time off from house work, bring them to a movie or a restaurant, buy them something they have always wanted and needed but had to put off buying in favor of our needs. In whatever manner we choose to convey our greetings to our mothers today, let us not forget to give them the warmest hug – which is still the best way to make them feel how much they are loved and appreciated.
If CARE is a WAVE, I give u SEA. If RESPECT is a LEAF, I give u TREE. If TRUST is a PLANET, I give u GALAXY; if FRIENDSHIP is LIFE I give u MINE 4 FREE. Keep smiling. You’re the kind of friend that only heaven could have sent. I appreciate all the things you do, and the way you show you care. Last night I sent an angel 2 watch over u while u were sleeping but it came back early! So I asked it why? It said that angels don't watch over other angels! Of all the friends I've ever met. You’re the one I won't forget. And if I die before you do I'll go to heaven and wait for you. One day Friendship & Love met one-another. Love asked Friendship -"Why do you exist if I'm there?" So Friendship said -"To give a Smile to those eyes in which you leave Tears." It’s not an achievement 2 make 100 Friends in a Year, but an achievement is 2 make a Friend for 100 Years, 'N' I know I've made ONE, that's . . . YOU!! Yeah we're tight, and yeah we fight, but through all of it, there's one thing that will never change, we'll be friends forever. Friends are like gold. Each one is rich and they all last a lifetime. Stay with me, I'll stay with you and we'll be friends, through and through.
